Mereology is not a Guide to (In)conceivability

چکیده

A sophisticated version of the zombie argument due to David Chalmers runs roughly as follows: a world is ideally primarily conceivable, and whatever conceivable possible. Thus, possible, which implies, in turn, that either physicalism false or Russellian monism true. Appealing some plausible mereological considerations, Daniel Giberman presents novel effect zombies are not conceivable. I shall argue, firstly, main premise Giberman's ill-supported, it trades on confusion between primary secondary intensions "actually" operator. then consider two lines reasoning, might be extracted from text, favour another chief his argument. argue first line reasoning flawed, second one, effect, will transform into kind "parity argument" considerations play no role.

An extensionalist’s guide to non-extensional mereology

Formal mereology should be of interest to metaphysicians because it allows us, in a rigorous way, to determine the consequence relations between metaphysical theses and theories, many of which are of metaphysical interest. Take, for example, the many and various puzzles of constitution, and the metaphysical theories that have been advanced to solve them. Ideally, it should be possible to analys...

What is Classical Mereology?

Classical mereology is a formal theory of the part-whole relation, essentially involving a notion of mereological fusion, or sum. There are various different definitions of fusion in the literature, and various axiomatizations for classical mereology. Though the equivalence of the definitions of fusion is provable from axiom sets, the definitions are not logically equivalent, and, hence, are no...

Why τ is Probably not Used to Guide Reaches Geoffrey

We suggest that τ may not be used to guide reaches. The reasons are: (1) targeted reaching is an intrinsically spatial task that requires information about length dimensioned properties (i.e. object distance, size, and/or velocity); (2) τ is time dimensioned and thus provides no spatial information. A τ variable can be constructed from perceived spatial variables and then used in a control dyna...

Mereology and Rough Mereology: Rough Mereological Granulation

In this chapter, we embark on a more specific granulation theory, stemming from the mereological theory of things. This mechanism provides us with tolerance and weak tolerance relations forming a graded similarity in the sense of Chap.1 and with resulting therefrom granules. To put the necessary notions in a proper order, we are going to discuss mereology, rough mereology and the mereological g...
